Submitting your website to search engines is the first and the most basic step a webmaster takes to get the word out about his/her new website. There was a time when this was a very long and tedious process, where one had to go through many different search engines, and submit their websites manually, but now there are many services, which promise that they will automatically submit your website, for a low cost, thereby saving you a lot of time and hassle.
- So are their claims genuine?
- Should you go with them?
- Or is it better to do this boring and tedious job manually?
This article aims to answer these questions.
I bet you’ve come across a few statements like these below….
“We will submit your website to 10,000 search engines for only $30″
or
“Get listed in 1000 search engines for only $15″
These are the sort of claims you would have probably read on many websites, offering search engine submission services. It is strictly advised against using such services, due to many reasons, discussed below.
Firstly, there are at the most 10 major search engines, which send 95% of the traffic to all websites, and the other 5% are usually free for all (FFA) search engines, which just take in submissions, and may rank your site at the top for a short period, and will lower your position as soon as a new load of submissions come in. Even if they do send you little traffic it is likely to be untargeted. It is also to be noted that most FFA search engines are topic specific. Another danger with these types of search engines is that your email address is most likely to be sold to third parties and ultimately your inbox filled with spam, and when you are going for a 1000 submissions, there is no way to find out which search engine actually sold your email address.
There are some other services which actually claim to submit your website free to these search engines, now as the saying goes ¡§there is no free lunch¡¨, they purely work with the sole intention of obtaining your email addresses for spam purposes.
Another claim made by some search engine submission services is ¡§we can get you high rankings in major search engines¡¨. This is totally untrue, and impossible. Search engine submission by these services is done by using automatic software, which opens up the site submission page, fills up the form with the help of information provided and submits it. This process has nothing to do with optimizing your website for better rankings. Some of these services also claim that they can get your entire site indexed in only a day. Once again, this is not possible as most search engines have limits on the number of pages that can be submitted to them, in a day. For e.g. with Google you can submit a maximum of five pages per day.

What i dont understand is why people have to use shortcuts for ranking their websites on the top. I believe the content will speak for itself. If the content and structure is good, the website will eventually reach the top of the charts..

I think for just submission to many search engines & directories (not some 1000) this method is useful. In order to SEO work you have to take part yourself (if you are skillful) or you have to acquire the services of proper SEO.
My 2 cents thought…

I think they are scams, They have no real use because as much as they want to make it happen, it wont happen till a crawler hits your site and put it thee it self, but You have to advertise and get traffic rolling in. To get traffic rolling in you must build your site with content. My sense.

When I was new in SEO world, I always used such services but they never made any difference to my sites. I stopped using them as I got experience in this field. There is one more reason not to use them that big search engines like Google & Yahoo might treat such links as spam (because all were built overnight) which can result in negative impact.

I think the submition of site manually is really a very long process.I think these search engines are very useful for submition of sites and they really reduce important time.

From my experience you can get your sites manually and easily included in the top10 search engines, you just need to follow the guidelines laid by each search engine and make your site search engine friendly, i personally never opted for paying someone to get my sites listed and gladly all my sites are listed in top search engines for FREE now!

Well… A good post. I don’t think it is true about the thousands of submits just for a few bux, because it takes long and its a REALLY hard work.

And… About the spamming - That is true. Such websites are the ones where spam comes from. Actually, FFA’s are not as popular as not-FFA’s. To be honest, it puts your link for a while because not many people invest to put their sites into FFA services.

very cognitive information . Kudos to the author. I really feel that spamming is something that needs to be taken care of constantly and there are many webmasters that face a lot of conflict in this issue

With all the choices offered for search engine marketing, choosing a reliable service can be confusing and intimidating. Many search engine marketing companies make ridiculous promises so that i suggest that Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service so believing is so hard to be satisfied yourself must make all control by your sense.

I think this method is useful but its not that trustworthy ! It has to be tested
September 10th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
the best thin i say do manually or hire those who submits manually because their is a lot difference between manual and auto submission

As always content is king, however there is nothing wrong with submissions to search engines to help move things along, sometimes it can take months for a new website to get index by the big 3 search engines (Google, MSN and Yahoo) so submitting your site to some smaller search engines can expedite your entry into the major search indexes.

Unfortunately, no matter how many times we tell webmasters that there is no “free lunch” - they continue to do it. Spikes in traffic are not good! It looks bad to your advertisers, and is quite questionable if ads are clicked during those spikes. Good article, I hope you write some more on this.
